FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Ave Maria University Ultimate frisbee team kicked off their weekend at FGCU with a display of skill and spirit that left an impression. The Gyrenes opened their tournament against FGCU, and from the first pull, they dominated the game with an impressive defensive performance. The Gyrenes never relinquished control, maintaining a solid game from start to finish.
In their second match, they faced the University of Miami. The Gyrenes started strong, quickly establishing a 3-0 lead. Miami tested Ave Maria's defense repeatedly, pushing to the goal line but finding no success as the Gyrenes' defense held firm. This game, however, was highlighted by the Gyrenes' offense, which shone brightly, scoring quickly and efficiently every time they took the field.
The final matches of the day were against Eckerd and UCF B, where once again, the defensive prowess of the Gyrenes was on full display. Both teams struggled to advance the disc, with most of their plays being neutralized well before crossing midfield.
Coach Middendorf expressed his thoughts after the games, stating, "This was by far the strongest our team has ever performed for a first tournament of the season. God blessed us so much, and we are doing it all for Him and Our Lady."
Looking ahead, the Gyrenes are set to take the field next at LSU for the Mardi Gras tournament on February 22-23, where they hope to continue their winning ways in the spirit of competition and faith.
