Brunswick, Ga. — The Ave Maria Women's Golf team opened their spring season in the Peach State Monday and Tuesday, placing 10
th of 14 teams in the Coastal Georgia Invitational. The Gyrenes beat out St. Thomas by one stroke to finish in the top 10.
The first round was the better of the two for Ave Maria, finishing at +47. Marissa Spreitzer led the team with a 79 in the opening 18 holes. Spreitzer hit one birdie in her opening round on the final hole of the day. Gracie Milam hit the other birdie of the day for the Gyrenes. She finished second on the team with an 83. Grace Wiggins and Maya Berglund rounded out the team with an 86 and an 87 respectively.
On day two, Ave Maria shot a +52 as team. Again, Spreitzer led the way hitting the only birdie of the day for the Gyrenes and finishing with an 81. Milam, Wiggins, and Berglund finished in the same order for Ave Maria as well at 83, 86, and 90, respectively.
Ave Maria finished +99 over the invitational, beating St. Thomas by just one stroke for a top 10 finish. The Gyrenes finished ahead of another Sun Conference, with New College placing last of the 14 teams. Keiser won the invitational shooting 13 over for the whole team.
Spreitzer had the best tournament for the Gyrenes, shooting a combined 16 over in two rounds. That placed her in a four-way tie for 27
th out of 76 golfers.
The Gyrenes get two weeks off before returning back out to the links in Victoria, Texas, in the Claude Jacobs Invite, hosted by the University of Houston-Victoria. It is the first ever trip to the Lone Star State for the Ave Maria Golf team.
