Women’s Golf Gets Spring Season Started

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. — The Ave Maria Women's Golf team kicked off their spring season Monday and Tuesday at the Jekyll Island Golf Club Pine Lakes course. The Gyrenes finished 13th in a field of 15 teams.

Gianna Reginelli led the team in the opening round with an 81 on the par-72 course. Reginelli also carded three birdies in the round which was the most in a single round among all the Gyrenes. Lauren Steward was just a stroke behind her at 10-over par followed by Grace Wiggins at +11 and Marissa Spreitzer at +19.

In total, Ave Maria turned in a score of +49 after the first day of competition and was ahead of four other teams.

On Tuesday, the Gyrenes turned in an identical team score of +49. Again, Reginelli led the team and improved her score by one stroke with an 80. Stewart finished second with a +10 and Spreitzer finished third with a +14. Gianna Moresi got on the scorecard for the first time in the second round with a +17.

Despite holding steady and repeating their score from Monday, the Gyrenes fell two spots in the leaderboard as Murray State and Blue Mountain each shot better on the second day.

For the whole tournament, Ave Maria finished 13th with a final score of +98. They were 84 strokes ahead of 14th place Montreat and just two strokes behind 12th place Blue Mountain.

Reginelli finished the highest among all Gyrenes, tying four other players for 40th place. Stewart was next on the player leaderboard at tied for 50th followed by Wiggins in 67th place, Spreitzer in 71st place and Moresi in 76th place.

The Gyrenes are back out on the links March 2 and 3 when they take a trip out the Grand Canyon State to compete in the OUAZ Invitational. It will be the Ave Maria Women's Golf team's first ever trip to Arizona in program history.
