Reginelli Shines as Women’s Golf Finishes Fifth

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Ave Maria Women's Golf Team participated in the Kona Ice Keiser Cup March 8-10 at the Okeeheelee Golf Course. The Gyrenes placed fifth out of eight teams, with Giana Geginelli finishing in the top five. 

Reginelli led the Gyrenes on day one shooting 7-over-par with two birdies. Lauren Stewart finished next on the team shooting nine strokes over par. The junior had the most birdies among the Gyrenes with three. Maya Berglund finished third on the team +12 and also carded a birdie. Marissa Spreitzer rounded out the group with a score of +14. Spreitzer also logged a birdie in the opening round of the tournament.

At the end of the first day, the Gyrenes were sitting in sixth place, four strokes behind fellow Sun Conference opponent New College of Florida.

The second day was the best round of the tournament for the Gyrenes as they shot a combined +21.

Reginelli led the team again, this time just shooting 3-over-par. The freshman had a tricky opening hole, finishing with a double bogey, but got back on track with 12 pars and two birdies in her final 17 holes.

Stewart carded the best hole of the tournament for the Gyrenes with an eagle right after the turn. It was the second eagle of the season for the Gyrenes and the first for Stewart. She finished the round adding another birdie and shooting four-over-par.

Spreitzer was third on the team in the round with a score of +7 and two birdies. Gracie Milam got in Ave Maria's top four for the first time in the second round, shooting seven-over-par and adding a birdie.

The Gyrenes posted the second best score of the round and were just one stroke behind the No. 1 ranked Keiser Seahawks. New College of Florida shot a score of +41 as a team and the Gyrenes leapfrogged the Mighty Banyans for fifth place.

Reginelli carried her spark into the final round, posting a score of +2. She logged four birdies over the round, two in the front nine and two in the back nine. For the entire round, Reginelli logged eight birdies over all three days.

Stewart was next on the team in round three at 10-over-par. Spreitzer followed her with a +13 and Milam closed out the group with a +15. Both Stewart and Milam carded a birdie on the final day.

New College of Florida made up six strokes on the Gyrenes in the final round, but it wasn't enough as Ave Maria secured fifth place with a score of +103.

Individually, Reginelli finished tied for 5th place in a field of 50 golfers. It is her second top-5 finish of the year and her highest placement in the spring season. Reginelli tied with Herry Ji from Keiser and was just two strokes behind the two golfers who tied for third.

Lauren Stewart finished 21st, shooting +23. Spreitzer finished 29th, shooting 34 strokes over par. Miliam tied 31st place, shooting +37 overall. Berglund shot +41 and finished the invitational in 34th place.

The Gyrenes are back on the links March 30th and 31st as they take part in the TWU Spring Invite in Tennessee.
