NIOTA, Tenn. – The Ave Maria Women's Golf team won their second tournament as a team March 30-31, placing first in the TWU Spring Tournament. The Gyrenes improved their score by 21 strokes from the first round to the second to pass the Point Skyhawks take first place in Tennessee. Four of the five Gyrenes finished in the Top 10.
Marissa Spreitzer led the Gyrenes on day one with two birdies and a score of +11. Gianna Reginelli was a stroke behind her, carding an 84. Maya Berglund and Gracie Milam rounded out the group as both finished the day shooting 14-over-par.
As a team, the Gyrenes ended the first day 51-over-par and in second place. Ave Maria was five strokes behind Point and was looking to make that up on the second day.
In the last 18 holes, Lauren Stewart, who finished fifth in the lineup on Monday, led the Gyrenes with three birdies and finished the round shooting 6-over-par. Reginelli and Berglund tied for second on the team, each shooting 7-over-par and carding a birdie. Spreitzer knocked in a birdie too and rounded out the group with a +10.
With a combined score of +30, the Gyrenes finished 20 strokes ahead of the next team in the second round. That team was the Point Skyhawks as Ave Maria made up the five strokes they needed to take first place and more.
Individually, Reginelli led the Gyrenes, her +19 earned a finish in 3rd place out of 33 athletes. Stewart, Spreitzer, and Berglund all finished tied for 4th place with the score of 21 strokes over par. Milam finished just outside of the top 10, placing in 11th place.
The Spring Invite was the last tournament of the regular season as Ave Maria switches their focus to the Sun Conference. The Gyrenes are back on the links April 19-21 for The Sun Conference Championship. The tournament will be hosted at the Fountains Country Club in Lake Worth, Florida.
