TAMPA, Fla. — The Ave Maria Women's Golf team finished second in their regular season finale, the Florida College Invitational. It was a tight race to the finish as the Gyrenes ended just three strokes ahead of the third place St. Thomas Bobcats.
Maya Berglund and Gracie Milam tied for the team lead in the first round, both shooting an 85. Right behind them was Marissa Spreitzer at 87 and Grace Wiggins at 90. With a total score of +59 through the first round, the Gyrenes found themselves in third place, 19 strokes back of the Bobcats.
Round two was the best round of the tournament for the Gyrenes, finishing with an overall score of +40. Berglund led the team with a 77 and had the most birdies in the round with three. Wiggins finished second on the team with 81. Milam and Spreitzer rounded out the team, both at 85. Milam had two birdies in the round and Spreitzer had one.
St. Thomas posted a +62 in the second round and the Gyrenes surged ahead of the Bobcats by three strokes.
It all came down to the final round to decide second place in the invitational. Spreitzer led the team with an 87 and recorded her second birdie of the tournament. Right behind her was Milam at 88. Wiggins finished third on the team with an 89 followed by Berglund with a 92. Both Wiggins and Berglund each had a birdie in the final round.
Ave Maria and St. Thomas matched each other shot for shot in the third round, both posting a +68. With that, the Gyrenes were able to edge ahead of the Bobcats and finish second with a +167 on the tournament to St. Thomas' +170. Second place is the highest the Gyrenes have finished in a tournament this season and a great confidence booster heading into the conference tournament.
Berglund had the best tournament for the Gyrenes, finishing tied for seventh in a field of 21 players with a +38 over three rounds.
Ave Maria gets the next week off before heading north to Brunswick, Georgia, for the Sun Conference Championship April 27-29. The Gyrenes will play the Pine Lakes Course at the Jekyll Island Golf Club with a conference championship on the line.
