Women’s Golf Finishes Sixth in Sun Championship

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. — The Ave Maria Women's Golf team competed in the Sun Conference Championships Sunday, April 27, through Tuesday, April 29. The Gyrenes finished in sixth place out of seven teams. It is the first time since 2018 the Gyrenes have finished ahead of another team in the conference championship.

Marrissa Spreitzer led the way for the Gyrenes all tournament long, posting the best score in all three rounds. She opened the tournament with a 79 on Sunday, collecting two birdies. Monday got a little tougher with Spreitzer shooting an 84, but they she had her best day of the tournament in the final round. On Tuesday, Spreitzer shot a 78, again with two birdies. At four, Spreitzer had the most birdies on the team. She finished +21 in the tournament and tied for 21st place.

Grace Milam was the next highest for the Gyrenes, finishing tied for 27th place. Milam shot an 86 in rounds one and two and then improved by three strokes in round three. At +39, she improved by three strokes from the previous tournament at Florida College.

Maya Berglund was right behind her at 29th place. Berglund shot an 87 in round one and then finished the tournament with back-to-back 85s in rounds two and three. In the second round, she collected two birdies, both on the back nine.

Grace Wiggins finished in 31st place. Wiggins was second on the team after the first round with an 83 on Sunday. She was just two over at the turn and parred four holes in a row between the third and sixth holes. Monday and Tuesday got a little tougher, shooting 92 and 89, respectively.

The last golfer for the Gyrenes was Ava Bartosiak finishing at 33rd. Bartosiak had one birdie on Sunday and shot an 89 in the opening round. Her final two rounds both ended with scores of 94.

As a team, the Gyrenes finished in sixth place with an overall score +153. They were 74 strokes ahead of the last placed team in New College. It is the first time since 2018 that the Gyrenes have placed ahead of a team in the Sun Conference Championship.

Keiser won the tournament with a team score of +28. SCAD finished second followed by Coastal Georgia, Southeastern, St. Thomas, Ave Maria and New College.
