GREENVILLE, Ala.- The Ave Maria University women's golf team completed their first tournament since the spring of 2019, playing in the SSAC Fall Preview at Cambrian Ridge in Greenville, Alabama. The Gyrenes finished sixth in the field of seven teams in their first event of the fall, which saw teams play 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday.
The Gyrenes' lowest team score came in the first round on Monday, as AMU posted a team score of 364. That score was led by Ave Maria's lowest round of the weekend, an 82 from freshman Gracie Salvator. Salvator birdied back-to-back holes on the fourth and fifth, and added a birdie on the par 3 13th hole.
In the second round of the first day, the Gyrenes were led by freshman Morgan Hicks and senior Eliana Tetzlaff. Both players shot an 88 in the second round. Tetzlaff, the lone returner from the 2019-20 season to play this week, had the best nine-hole stretch of the tournament, shooting a 40 on the back nine, which included a birdie on the 450 yard par 5 tenth hole.
Hicks again had Ave Maria's lowest round in the final round, carding an 89 on the last day of the tournament. Hicks was AMU's most consistent player of the tournament, as the freshman scored between 43 and 46 in each of the tournament's six nine-hole stretches, and scored between an 88 and a 90 in each of the three rounds to finish as Ave Maria's top finisher.
Tetzlaff followed Hicks in the team score for the Gyrenes, carding a 90, an 88, and a 92. After her first round 82, Salvator finished the tournament with a 95 and a 94. Ave Maria's team score was concluded by another freshman, Andrea Quinonez, who recorded rounds of 102, 94, and 98. AMU's team score was enough to top Mississippi University for Women in the seven-team field.
Dalton State cruised to the team title at the SSAC Fall Preview, recording a team score of 907 to win by 33 strokes over Loyola University New Orleans. Dalton State's Mailey Buzzell was the individual champion, shooting two over par for a seven shot win.
The SSAC Fall Preview was the final event on the fall schedule for the women's golf program, who will now prepare for the spring season. The Gyrenes will prepare to face some of the top teams in the nation, as five of the nation's top 30 teams compete in The Sun Conference.
