ST. SIMON's ISLAND, Ga.- The Ave Maria University women's golf team got their 2022 spring season underway this week, competing in the 2022 Coastal Georgia Winter Invitational. The Gyrenes finished eighth in the competitive field, which included four teams currently ranked in the NAIA Coaches' Poll, which teed off at the King and Prince Golf Course in St. Simons Island, Georgia.
The Gyrenes shaved seven strokes off their score from Monday to Tuesday, shooting at 390 in the first round and a 383 in the final round. Southeastern, who is currently ranked No. 9 in the nation, claimed the team title with a 617 team total, beating out No. 25 Ottawa (AZ) by 16 strokes. Hansen Ida of Newberry College won the individual title by one stroke over Olivia Serpa of Ottawa and Kate Kenthack of Southeastern.
Ave Maria's top finisher in the tournament was Eliana Tetzlaff, who shot AMU's best score on both days of the tournament. The Minnesota native improved her score by eight strokes from the first to the second round, shooting a 92 on Monday and following up with an 84 on Tuesday, a score that was in the middle of the competitive field. Tetzlaff's score was 2.2 shots better than the tournament average on Tuesday.Â
Morgan Hicks also bettered her score from the first round to the second, shooting a 98 in the opening round and shaving three strokes off on Tuesday for a 95. Andrea Quinonez, who had Ave Maria's second best score of the week at 190, was consistent in her play, shooting a 95 on both days. Madeline Salvador rounded out Ave Maria's team score with rounds of 105 and 109.
Next on the schedule for the Gyrenes is the Monument Golf Oldfield Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of South Carolina Beaufort. The tournament will be played at the Oldfield Golf Club in Ekatie, South Carolina, and is expected to feature another competitive field. The tournament is scheduled to start on Monday, February 28, with the final round the following day.Â
