CLARKESVILLE, Ga.- The Ave Maria University women's golf team placed two golfers in the top ten in this week's Piedmont College Spring Invitational, hosted at The Orchard Golf & Country Club in Clarkesville, Georgia. Freshman Morgan Hicks finished in a three-way tie for second with a 169, while senior Eliana Tetzlaff's 179 was enough for a tie for eighth place.
Hicks posted Ave Maria's best round on both of the tournament's two days. The freshman shot an 85 on Monday, sending her to the final round in a tie for third place. She then shot the fourth-lowest round of the tournament by any golfer in the field on Tuesday, an 84 that was also the second-lowest score of the day. That 84 was enough to make up the two-shot difference between second and third, giving Hicks her best finish as a Gyrene and a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
Tetzlaff added a top ten finish of her own, shooting an 89 on the first day to place seventh, and finishing the tournament in a tie for eighth after a 90 in the final round. The senior was one of just seven golfers to break 90 in the opening round, and one of just eight to shoot 90 or below in both rounds of the tournament.
Alexandria Henderson and Madeline Salvador were the other two AMU golfers in the field. Henderson shot a 100 on the first day in her best round, and finished in 24th. Salvador was in last place by three shots after the first round, but improved her score by ten strokes in the final round to pass two golfers and finish in 28th.
Overall, the Gyrenes finished in fourth place of the tournament, shooting a 396 on the first day and a 401 in the final round. The team champion was the host Piedmont, who held an eleven shot lead after the first round, and hung on to defeat Huntingdon College by six strokes. Individually, Monika Vicario carded the only two sub-80 rounds to easily win the tournament by 20 strokes.
The Gyrenes will play one more time before The Sun Conference Tournament, which is currently scheduled for April 30-May 3.
